Season 10 of the series continues telling the adventure a time-traveling alien and his human partner. In this season, he must team up with an investigative journalist and a superman to prevent alien's scheming which is to destroy New York.
This is the perfect conclusion for Godsacre; unlike his me, who made the trip for glory and riches, he was always just seeking a fresh start, and now he has one.
This standalone story (scripted by series vet Mark Gatiss) gives Twelve and his gang a bit of a breather after the monk three-parter that preceded it, in what feels like a mostly satisfying if ultimately workmanlike tale.
Mark Gatiss can usually be counted on to write Doctor Who episodes that are reliably suspenseful but don't often stretch the show's boundaries. He does it again with this week's "Empress of Mars," a successful standalone adventure
Despite an awkward start that had cuts flash past my eyes quickly enough to give me a confused feeling halfway between motion sickness and bewilderment, Empress of Mars turns out to be a stoic and dependable episode.
In addition to seeing how the escalating conflict plays out, "Empress of Mars" promises a reprieve from the lengthy serialization of the last three weeks.
Doctor Who should be more than just a hangout show with the Doctor and his companion, but when the main pair are this good, it's hard for any episode with them in it to be genuinely bad.
This had the feel of an old-fashioned Who romp, from the 'tache-twirling villain to the vintage monsters who were clearly just men in silly costumes. Loved those steampunk space suits, though.
