Black Lightning - Season 1, Episode 01: The Resurrection
Trailer
This series sees the retired Black Lightning return to the hero life after a decade hanging up his costume and devoting himself to the life of an educator, as well as its effects on his family life.
"The Resurrection" was a fantastic opening hour for the series, one that shows just how intelligent and complicated Black Lightning aspires to be. It's not a regular superhero show. That's a good thing.
Considering how fully-formed the premiere is, I wouldn't bet against the show-there's a good chance that The CW has yet another hit on its hands. Freeland needs Black Lightning, and so do we.
With one episode, Black Lightning has discussed gang violence, police brutality, sex trafficking, corruption, and generational divides in activism. Let's see what the second episode has to bring.
Black Lightning doesn't redefine the superhero genre, but it does do an excellent job of grounding its characters in a realistic world where the weight of their decisions feels more important than those of the other live-action DC shows.
It felt like the show was engaging in the kind of thoughtful inside the community conversations I've been hearing my entire life, the ones that some wrongly argue never occur.
