Jean-Luc Picard is the captain of the USS Enterprise-D. He is an accomplished diplomat, avid reader, fearless adventurer and dry wit. Picard is brave, loyal, and intensely private. He can be inscrutable at times, but cares deeply for the people close to him, including his crew. He does not hesitate to risk his own well-being where the safety of others is concerned and believes deeply in the Starfleet mission of exploration. As a leader, he inspires fealty and conviction.Although he was initially uncomfortable with the Enterprise's civilian family contingent, and the idea of being around children in general, he eventually warmed to the idea.He is fond of giving orders by saying Make it so and starting the warp drive with an Engage command. He is occasionally tormented by the omnipotent being known as Q, who enjoys toying with Picard. Background: Picard was born July 13, 2305 in La Barre, France to Maurice and Yvette Picard. He has a brother, Robert, and nephew, Rene, but no children of his own. He eschewed the family business of wine making to enroll in Starfleet Academy, although he failed the entrance exam the first time he took it.After graduating, in 2328 he was stabbed through the heart in a brawl and a cardiac device was implanted to save his life. He was assigned as first officer aboard the USS Stargazer in 2333, which he was forced to abandon in 2355 after an encounter with Ferengi. A warp speed ploy Picard employed in that encounter is studied and the tactic bears his name.He was assigned to the new galaxy class USS Enterprise-D in 2363.In 2366, he was captured by the Borg, a biomechanical race, and assimilated as Locutus, but he was later rescued -- the only person to be so lucky.Picard has never been married, but has had a series of failed relationships including Jenice Manheim in 2342, Capt. Phillipa Louvois in 2356, rogue archeologist Vash in 2366 and '68, and Lt. Cmdr. Nella Darren in 2369. He also harbors feelings for the Enterprise-D's Chief Medical Officer Beverly Crusher, although he feels tremendous guilt over the death of her husband Jack Crusher on a Stargazer away mission under his command. He is a fan of the Dixon Hill detective series and occasionally enters that hard boiled universe on the Holodeck.
