Aang is the newest Avatar, meaning that he can manipulate air, water, earth, and fire, whereas everyone else in the Four Nations can bend either one or none. As the reincarnation of the Avatar, he possesses several lifetimes of skill and is the most powerful bender. Aang retains many of the traits of a 12-year-old, including being fun-loving and playful. He does not like violence, despite his great capacity to inflict it. He struggles with the responsibility of being an Avatar. Background: Aang was born to two unknown Air Nomads in 12 BSC, immediately following the death of the previous Avatar, Roku, but he was taken in by the monks of the Southern Air Temple after they discovered he was the Avatar. He traveled the world and was primarily raised by Monk Gyatso. He was a member of the Air Scouts and showed early signs of being the Avatar, by being drawn to choose Avatar relics from among thousands of toys. When he was six years old, he selected the sky bison that would remain his lifelong companion by offering Appa an apple. Even at that young age, Aang demonstrated advanced airbending moves. By age 12 he had earned airbending tattoos and was an airbending master, the youngest ever. With war on the horizon, the monks revealed to Aang his identity as the Avatar, when he was 12, instead of the traditional age of 16. The burden weighed heavily on him and he fled with Appa. When they were caught in a storm, he used a combination of water-and-airbending to freeze them in a sphere of ice, where they remained, alive in the Avatar State, for the next 100 years.Aang was unwittingly released by two members of the Southern Water Tribe: the Waterbender Katara and her non-bending brother, a young warrior named Sokka. Although he was technically 112 years old, Aang is still in his 12 year-old state. Unfortunately for Aang, the banished prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko, has been ordered to capture the Avatar in order to return to the Fire Nation. With the help of Katara and Sokka, Aang must find the Master benders of the other elements, Fire, Water, and Earth, and learn from them in order to assume the true mantle of the Avatar and restore balance to the world.
